Almost everyone in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree covers up their faces, whether that be because they’re equipped head to toe in hulking metal armor, they’re simply wearing a mask, orthey’ve horribly mutated their physical form so they can breathe fire through a dragon’s head. Unlike other developers, FromSoftware ensures that your mysterious masked allies all have individual faces, showcasing the detail the studio puts into its games.
Just like in the base game,which saw people realize how much of a looker Blackguard Big Boggart actually is, every masked NPC in Shadow of the Erdtree has been unmasked, and there are actually some interesting features you can glean from their faces. This was done by popular FromSoftware content creator Zullie the Witch, who uploaded a video with each character and their facedata earlier this week.
Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree’s New NPCs Have Already Been Unmasked
For starters, these face reveals show you what the two dragon characters you can meet in Shadow of the Erdtree - Dragon Communion Priestess and Ancient Dragon Man - actually looked like before their transformations. We can also see that Swordhand of Night Jolán and Swordhand of Night Anna share roughly the same facedata, which isn’t all that surprising given they’re siblings, but it does raise another interesting point.
If FromSoftware is particular about giving siblings similar facedata, then the Dancer of Ranah sharing very similar facedata with Tanith -the head of Volcano Manor in the base game- may not be just a coincidence. Other than that, we don’t see anything else too revelatory, but it is interesting to see what popular characters such as Redmane Freya and Needle Knight Leda actually look like under their helmets, especially the latter since her face was teased in the game’s promotional material.
Unfortunately, we can’t get the faces or facedata forboss characters like Rellana or Messmer, as Zullie the Witch explains that these characters have unique models and can’t be easily replicated in the character creator. If you’re desperate to cosplay as Rellana, you can still give it a try though, and failing that, at least you have some cool armor to run around in.
