Summary

Dune: Awakeninghas received a new cinematic story trailer during this year’s Summer Game Fest, revealing that the game will be set in an alternate timeline.

We’ve known about Dune: Awakening for a little while now, having first been announced way back in 2022as an open world survival MMO, and we’ve had regular updates about what we can expect from the title ever since. We know it’s being developed by Funcom, the folks behind Conan Exiles, and that elements from the book and movies suchas menacing sand wormswill be included.

We haven’t been shown much of the game’s story though, which isn’t surprising given open world survival MMOs aren’t exactly the best vehicles for a gripping narrative. Nevertheless, that didn’t stop Funcom from showing off a new story trailer with an interesting twist, as Dune: Awakening will explore a timeline of Dune that would have occurred had main character Paul Atreides never been born, and his mother birthed a girl instead.

Dune: Awakening Will Take Place In An Alternate Timeline

After that, the trailer goes into great detail about what the world of Dune would look like without Paul Atreides, suggesting that these will be the events that players will get to experience when Dune: Awakening finally launches. On that front, we unfortunately didn’t get a release date for the title at Summer Game Fest, but Funcom did reveal that a standalone direct will take place later this month, with a gameplay trailer expected to drop during Gamescom later this year. Until then, we’ll have to contemplate just what this new timeline could hold.

Of course, Dune: Awakening’s story trailer wasn’t the only big reveal of Summer Game Fest, as we got to see updates for a slew of new and existing titles. For example, Alan Wake 2 director Sam Lake got on stage toshow us the game’s new Night Springs DLC, which launches tomorrow and will let players take on the roles of Rose, Sherriff Breaker, and Jesse Faden, while PlayStation took the opportunityto announce Lego Horizon Adventures, a retelling of Zero Dawn’s story releasing for all platforms besides Xbox.
