Summary

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remakewas announced three years ago, and up until today things have been relatively radio silent. The remake, which will see the seminal JRPG take on the art style made popular byOctopath Traveler, has now been confirmed as a multiplatform title.

Additionally,Square Enixhas teased that “The legend of Erdrick draws near,” meaning that fans are probably not too far off from hearing news.

In honor of Dragon Quest Day, a day dedicated to celebrating the anniversary of the release of the first Dragon Quest game in Japan, the official DQ Twitter account shared an updated teaser for the remake. It’s a pretty nondescript teaser, but it does confirm that the game will be multiplatform. The multiplatform news isn’t all too surprising given that Square Enixrecently revealed that it would be shifting its focus to a more multiplatform-based strategyafterFinal Fantasy 16 and Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth failed to hit their sales targets. Dragon Quest HD-2D Remake looks to be the company’s first big push in that strategy.

Back in 2021, when the game was first revealed, it represented a massive undertaking in bringingone of gaming’s most seminal titles to modern hardware. The original Dragon Quest 3 was released all the way back in 1988 on Famicom andNES. An enhanced version was later re-released for theGame Boy Colorin 2001, and the JRPG would later grace mobile phones and theWiiin the late 2000s. In other words, unless you happen to have access to a copy, then the game has largely remained inaccessible.

Its HD-2D art stylehas been utilized by Octopath Traveler, and it sees the 2D character sprites moving through high-definition backgrounds. At the time, the announcement trailer showcased some combat and exploration elementsin which the title looked absolutely breathtaking.

While no gameplay was included in this year’s Dragon Quest Day teaser, it stands to reason that the finished product will look exactly, if not better, than what had been originally unveiled. And with Summer Game Fest approaching and rumors of other showcases in play, it stands to reason that it won’t be long before more information will arrive.
