Summary

BioWarehas confirmed whenDragon Age: The Veilguard’s story takes place, giving us a good idea of what we can expect to see in the long-awaited sequel. However, it also hints at some bad news for some of the older companions, as so much time has passed that they might not even be alive anymore

Ina Q&Aover on Discord, it was confirmed that Dragon Age: The Veilguard takes place ten years afterInquisition, putting it in the year 9:52. This puts it 22 years after the Battle of Ostagar - the start ofDragon Age: Origins- meaning theHero of Fereldenhas been aGrey Wardenfor more than two decades if they’re still alive.

However, as you’ll also recall, Grey Wardens go through a Joining that severely limits their lifespan. In Origins, you’re told that after the Joining, you can expect to live another 30 years, but no longer than that. Other sources say that you have even less time than that. So, with our player characters from Origins having been Wardens for 22 years now, they’re getting to a point where they could be living on borrowed time.

What Other Grey Wardens Are At Risk?

It isn’t just the Hero of Ferelden we have to be worried about. Here are just some of the potential Wardens that could have gone through a Joining within a few years of each other, putting their lives at risk too:

Of course, every single one of these characters can be killed off separately too. There are loads of different possibilities for where they are now and a lot to account for after such a huge time jump, so it will be interesting to see if The Veilguard decides to address this or avoids mentioning them wherever possible.

There are other things to consider with this 22-year jump too. For starters, Morrigan’s son, Kieran, will be an adult now. Whoever became the king or queen of Ferelden will also be well into their rule, and if they haven’t had a child, that could spark concerns for the succession. Somewhat similarly, the new Divine would have been in place for a good few years, so whatever changes they wanted to make could have already been implemented.

We’ll have to wait and see how many of these questions The Veilguard is able to answer. But in the meantime, confirmation of this timeline has given us a lot to think about.
