Summary
Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s gameplay trailer is finally here, and it looks very different fromInquisiton. Here, we get a look at some much more fast-paced action, as our new protagonist fights their way to Solas.
Of course, Varric is here to join the fight too, so we get a look at how he’ll work in combat. We already know he’s not a permanent companion, but he’s here fighting with his crossbow, Bianca, all the same. He even offers to reason with Solas before they go in guns (or, rather, knives) blazing, so he clearly still has some faith in his old friend.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s Combat Is Very Different From Inquisition’s
As you can see, everything moves a lot faster. It helps that the player character is a rogue, but even then, it looks like The Veilguard could be our more action-orientatedDragon Agegame yet. We only see two of our permanent companions in action, Harding and Neve, but their abilities can be seen too.
One of the biggest reveals here is that we’ll be confronting Solas much earlier than anticipated. At the very start of the game, he’s already going through with his plan to tear down the veil, with the rest of the game seemingly focusing on the consequences of that - hence the name, The Veilguard.
Alongside the reveal, the embargo lifted on Dragon Age: The Veilguard gameplay previews. TheGamer’s Editor-in-Chief, Stacey Henley, got to check out the game at Summer Game Fest and confirmed that combat is much less tactical this time around. Instead, she describes it as, “more like a ‘BioWaregame’ than specifically a ‘Dragon Age’ game.”
This is perhaps most evident in the switch from a party of four to three. This puts The Veilguard more in line with BioWare’s other big RPG series,Mass Effect, which also only lets you squad up with two other characters. We also won’t get to control our companions directly, instead directing them to use certain abilities. This will be the first time this has been the case in a Dragon Age game, so it’s a pretty big departure from the formula.
We’ll have to wait and see when BioWare is ready to share more details about the game, especially as we’re yet to see gameplay for mages and warriors. Still, we can expect this very soon, as Dragon Age: The Veilguard is set to launch this autumn.
