Summary

Dragon Ageis beloved by many, but certainly not for its character creators. While there has always been a fair amount of physical attributes to customise, it’s always been held back by the same limitation - the hair options.

In fact, allBioWaregames are guilty of this. For so long, we’ve had about ten different variations of bald, and maybe a bob cut if we’re lucky. Want long hair? Tough luck, a bun is the best you’re going to get.

But finally, it looks like the devs have heard our pleas. According to a new preview fromGame Informer,Dragon Age: The Veilguardis going to have the most expansive character creator yet, including a range of hairstyles. And yes, it’s already been confirmed thatlonghairstyles will be included, as well as the ability to dye your hair unnatural colours.

So why has it taken so long? Judging from the preview, it sounds like it was due to technical limitations. Art director Matt Rhodes is quoted as saying, “The technology has finally caught up to our ambition,” so it seems they just couldn’t get long hair to work with the physics in the older games.

Hair Options In Previous Dragon Age Games Have Often Disappointed Fans

InDragon Age: Originsand Dragon Age 2, we had a couple of hairstyles that were clearly supposed to bekindalong. Then, by the time of Inquisition, long hair was banned in Thedas (alongside healing spells, apparently) because there werezerooptions that even resembled long hair. You can choose to have a bun that looks like it might be hiding some luscious locks, but you’d still have to use your imagination.

But this isn’t all that The Veilguard is set to improve on.As noted by our editor-in-chief Stacey Henleyduring a preview, body parts can be customised individually, and are completely separated from your character’s gender identity. We also now know that we’ll be able to select pronouns, choosing from she/her, he/him, and they/them, much like we can inBaldur’s Gate 3andStarfield.

It’s unclear if the character creator will be dropped ahead of release so we can make our Rooks ahead of time. If not, I think it’s safe to assume what we’ll all be doing come launch day.
