Summary

At the end ofDragon Age: The Veilguard’sgameplay reveal, we gota brief look at two new characters. It has since been confirmed that they are villains, withBioWaredescribing them as “two of [Solas'] most ancient and powerful adversaries”. Other than that, it’s unclear who they’re supposed to be.

However, an eagle-eyed fan may have already identified them - thanks toDragon Age: Origins. Dragon Age YouTuber Ghil Dirthalen has pointed out that the figure to the right of Solas bears a striking resemblance to a defaced statue of Maferath, Andraste’s mortal husband who we’re told betrayed her to Tevinter. If this is on purpose, it has huge implications for the story of The Veilguard, the lore of Thedas as a whole.

One Of Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s Villains May Have Already Been Identified

The image Ghil Dirthalen shares of Maferath comes from the Dragon Age: Origins expansion, Awakening. This is particularly noteworthy as the darkspawn in this expansion were intelligent and refused to leave the surface when the Archdemon was defeated.

With this in mind, why would intelligent darkspawn want to deface a statue of Maferath in this particular way? And why would this figure in The Veilguard’s trailer almost perfectly resemble the defaced statue? Well, fans have their theories, with some believing that the figureisMaferath, and that The Veilguard is setting up a new backstory for the religious figure. This would have huge lore implications since we’ve been told similar stories about Maferath and his betrayal of Andraste throughout the series.

This isn’t the only theory though. Others point out that we’ve only seen Maferath depicted as human, and the guy in the trailer is elven. That might mean that the two characters are completely different people, and the darkspawn just wanted to depict this villainous figure over one of Ferelden’s statues - whoever they are.

Still, whatever the case, it looks like there’s some kind of connection to be made here. It’s a very particular design, so it’s hard to imagine this is a coincidence. If there is something to this, then it proves just how dedicated this community is, as they may have identified one of the villains before we even got a firm release date for the game.
