Early in yourShin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeanceadventure, you’ll explore the desert wasteland of Minato, the first of Da’at’s otherworldly landscapes. While you’re here, numerous sub-quests will become available, including “The Cursed Mermaids.”
Completing this quest is recommended, since it’ll net you a decent EXP reward and more. But it’s a multi-step process, which actually involves asecondsub-quest as well. Our guide includes both “The Cursed Mermaids” and its follow-up, “The Demon of the Spring.” Combined, these quests will challenge you with a pair of somewhat tough battles. Read on to find out how to best them with ease.

“The Cursed Mermaids”
To begin this quest, you will need to have reachedthe Hamamatsucho areain Shin Megami Tensei 5’s (and Vengeance’s) first region. This occurs fairly early on - maybe 45 minutes or so on average?
You’ll know you’re getting close to where you can pick up “The Cursed Mermaids” when you’ll seea collapsed bridgenot far from theHamamatsucho Leyline. Rather than scaling the bridge itself, walk beneath it.

Eventually, you’ll reach a dead endwith a pond and a quest-giving mermaid. Speaking with her will initiate the quest, butyou won’t be able to progress it until after you’ve defeated the Hydra near Tokyo Tower.
At this point, the map will open up enough that you may reach your destination. From the Hydra boss fight’s location, explore the map toward the southwest, keeping an eye on thequest destination markeras youdescend a significant sand slope.

Upon arriving,a battle against a Pazuzu will ensue. The Pazuzu is certainly a bit tougher than your average foe in this area, butit’s weak against ice while strong against dark and force.
That second bit’s doubly important, asPazuzu’s attacks are dark- and force-basedin design. Thus, you’ve got all the more reason to avoid bringing anyone along who’s weak to those.

Somewhat ironically, perhaps, you can have Mermaid already as a demon ally at this point, and she’s an excellent optionfor the battle.Stormcaller’s Songwill wreck Pazuzu. Return to the quest-giving Mermaid afterward.
ThreeGrimoiresare your reward for this first part in the two-stage quest, as well as a decent chunk of EXP.

“The Demon Of The Spring”
With “The Cursed Mermaids” behind you, the Mermaid has another quest:“The Demon of the Spring.“More of the region’s map will need to have been reached before we can get to where the quest marker denotes.
Since you’ll still be rather early into Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance, we’ll note that you can generally expect multi-quest lines like these to follow this pattern:progression through the game’s regions will need to continue to reach subsequent goals.
By the time you get to where you need to be,you will have reached the Kamiyacho Leyline Fount, the latest fast-travel spot in the post-Hydra portion of Minato.Venture east from the fount, scaling a mountainon the way.
You’ll soon meetAnahita, who we must defeat if we hope to lift the curse.Being weak to both fire and electricshould mean you have ample tools in your arsenal through which to defeat her.
Anahita deals medium ice damage to everyone with Hellish Spurt, andweak light damage to everyone via Mahama. The former has a +4 affinity boost, and the latter has a +2.
Despite relying upon ice-type moves herself,Mermaid continues to serve well here, as she willblocks ice attacks, which will in turnlower the number of actions Anahita can take.
We recommended bothMermaid and Angelas excellent early-game demons in a separate article, and that holds up here.Angel can block Mahama, which, again, will curb Anahita’s offensive enthusiasm by reducing actions.
With Anahita quieted, return to the quest-giving Mermaidto finish up this multistep mission andreceive a Femme Talismanfor your effort. You’ll also unlock Mermaid as ademon guide!
