Summary
Call of Dutydelivered a lengthy showcase eventfollowing the Xbox Games Showcase, where its next entry,Black Ops 6, was revealed in full. All sorts of information about the game was shown, including its new multiplayer movement system and, of course, all things zombies. But the most interesting aspects surrounding Black Ops 6’s October launch weren’t discussed in the event. No.
Viathe official Call of Duty Blog, we’ve learned that the “Carry Forward” program that currently exists in Modern Warfare 3 won’t be making its way to Black Ops 6. In other words, any purchased skins are useless outside Warzone, which acts as a separate mode anyway. We alsonow know how the day-and-date release for Xbox Game Pass will work, including how Game Pass Core and Game Pass Console subs won’t have access to the full game.
And, now, we’ve learned that the next game in the Call of Duty franchise will require an internet connection at all times. That isn’t surprising on its own, but what is surprising is that the requirementalso extends to the campaign. What is typically something that can be played entirely offline will now require an internet connection, and not just a one-time thing, either. It will require a continuous connection.
Activision Touts ‘Texture Streaming’ For Always Online Decision
In a FAQ at the very bottom of the Black Ops 6 title page, Activision revealed that even the campaign will require an internet connection. The reasoning as to why that is the case is particularly interesting. Here’s what it says:
To deliver the highest-quality visuals while also reducing the game’s overall storage space on your hard drive,Call of Duty: Black Ops 6will use texture streaming across all game modes. This means you’ll need a continuous internet connection to play any game mode, including Campaign. If you’re on a console, Campaign can be played without a premium subscription service such as Game Pass Core or PlayStation Plus.
Call of Dutyhas become particularly notorious over the past several years for its large installation size. And already, it looks like Black Ops 6 might follow that trend. Savvy internet users spotted that the listing for Black Ops 6 included a file size of well over 300 gigabytes.
However, according to CharlieIntel, that listing represents the sum of the entire Call of Duty app, including Modern Warfare 2, 3 and Black Ops 6. Additionally, Activision will work towards lowering that file size, according to the popular Call of Duty news site. It would appear, then, that the texture streaming would be part of that effort, but at the expense of those who don’t have a stable internet connection as well as game preservation as a whole.
After all, it wasn’t too long ago thatThe Crew saw its servers disconnected and the game rendered unplayable. It’s not too far-fetched to think that something similar could happen to Black Ops 6 when, and if, servers were to be cut down the line.
Elsewhere, Activisionconfirmed that split-screen will be in Black Ops 6, except it’ll be limited to current gen hardware only. The publisher wrote, “To ensure performance integrity, split-screen gameplay will not be supported on Xbox One or PlayStation 4.” Unlike the campaign decision, that move isn’t all too surprising. Recently,Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero announced that its split-screen mode would be limited to a singular map, so it would appear that performance is a huge factor in all of this.
