Summary

Bethesda added the controversial Creation Club to Starfield last week(now called ‘Creations’) and was immediately met with backlash, dragging the Steam score down to ‘Mostly Negative’. Many criticised the platform as a way to sell mods for real money, while others were outraged that part of the Trackers Alliance questline was being sold separately for $7.

As reported byPC Gamer, Todd Howard said in an interview with MrMattyPlays that he “hears the feedback” and will “take a look at how we deliver content like that” in the future.

Todd Howard also explains that modders are no longer just hobbyists but “professionals” and so believe that they should get paid for their “awesome content”.

“We’re always trying to be kind of looking at what else is out there, really ensure we’re giving value to everybody,” Howard said. “And when we’re not, hey, we definitely will adjust.”

Bethesda Didn’t Intend To Split Up A Faction Questline For Money

The $7 quest, The Vulture, is what drew the most ire from fans. It’s the second part of a new faction, but can only be accessed with real money.

Concerns arose that Bethesda would slowly release more and more parts of this story in small paid chunks, which in a game that already cost $70 and has been slated by the community since launch for feeling barebones, stung.

We need to evaluate both pricing, what we put out for free, [and] how we communicate what’s in something.

Howard revealed that the intention was to “go the extra mile” by writing a quest around a new outfit and weapon, rather than simply selling those in the store as is. In response to worries of Bethesda “chopping up” a questline to sell for 700 credits a pop, Howard said that’s “Not what we want at all.”

“We’re going to take a look at that and how we deliver content like that, and whether we’re changing pricing or breaking it up, or what we should do there,” Howard said. “Great feedback from the community […] We need to evaluate both pricing, what we put out for free, how we communicate what’s in something, and really hear from the community there.”
