So, you’ve kicked down some dungeon doors, encountered some monsters, and looted some rooms in the world of Munchkin, and you still want more. Here’s the great news: Munchkin has a TON of expansions. Since its original release in 2001, the Munchkin creators have released a ton of new content, well over a dozen expansions containing well over a thousand cards.

That’s a lot of cards to spend money on and add to your game. If you have the money and space, go for it, then, by all means, buy all of them! That said, trying to use ALL the expansions may end up bogging down your game and making playtime longer than it should be. To help you narrow things down, here are some of the best Munchkin expansions you should add to your base game.

Munchkin Game Changers

Updated May 29, 2025, by Davis Collins:Munchkin has been chugging along, continuing to be one of the best and most popular board games out there, and continuing to get new expansions. Though there’s been a slight shift toward more numerous but smaller expansions, there’s still plenty to recommend, so we’ve come back to this list to include some newer items.

Munchkin Game Changers Card Game

Four products in one

This small collection of other, smaller expansions allows you to easily add four relatively hard-to-find products to your Munchkin game, some of which go beyond adding cards and introduce new mechanical elements to the gameplay.

Munchkin 9 Jurassic Snark

This list is going to be dominated by the main series of numbered expansions, because the sheer number of cards they contain tends to make them better value. However, there are also a ton of smaller packs of new cards with cool, niche themes. Some of these introduce interesting new ideas to the game, including new mechanics.

Four such expansions are collected here, all of which weren’t that easy to find before this product came out. This results in an eclectic but still nice collection of cards with different roles.

Munchkin 10

Munchkin 9 – Jurassic Snark

Rawr! Rawr! They’re stomping toward ‘ya

This full-size numbered expansion adds something that makes everything cooler: Dinosaurs. The closest things to giant monsters that have ever existed in reality, they make a great theme for a game like this.

Munchkin 7 - Cheat With Both Hands

What’s the coolest thing in the world? There are a couple of plausible candidates for that title, butone of the more compelling ones is dinosaurs. If you’re aPathfinderfan, the association between dinosaurs and Fantasy TTRPGs is probably lodged deep within your skull, but even if you aren’t, there’s no denying that they naturally go well together. When looking for inspiration for big, powerful monsters, there’s no better place to go than the biggest, baddest things that have ever lived on earth.

Not that fighting dinosaurs is all you can do with this expansion. On the contrary, the 112 cards in this expansion fit its theme in a variety of ways. Some of them are dinosaur-themed weapons, some are new races, and some simply must be seen for yourself.

Munchkin 6 - Double Dungeons

Munchkin 10 - Time Warp

It’s about time!

Released after a gap in Munchkin expansions, this full-size set has a time theme. This overlaps a bit with the dinosaur theme from the last expansion, but lets it explore a ton of interesting historical ideas.

After the last item on this list, there was a short gap between numbered Munchkin expansions. Some of the smaller ones were released during this time, but nothing as big as the main ones that’d come until then. Fortunately, the first numbered expansion of the 2020s eventually came, and it was this one here.

Munchkin Unicorns

Its theme is related to the previous one, but broader in a way that lets it go to more places. The theme of time allows it to include a variety of things, including items from history, more prehistoric monsters, scientific and technological achievements that grant levels, and some high-tech stuff as well.

Munchkin 7 - Cheat With Both Hands

Let’s Get Weird

Munchkin 7: Cheat With Both Hands is an expansion that allows players to combine different base game Munchkin types such as Munchkin Booty or Star Munchkin.

Munchkin doesn’t just have expansions. There are entire, separate base games, with themes ranging from pirates toStar Trek. Unfortunately, these versions of the game are not, by default, compatible with each other. Fortunately, this expansion makes it possible to mash them together.

Munchkin 2 - Unnatural Axe

This results in glorious chaos as multiple worlds collide. There’s not much out there that can matchthe utter awesomeness of shameless mixtures of science fiction and fantasy, and Munchkin’s wacky tone fits that aesthetic perfectly. This expansions also has the Ultra Munchkin, Super Duper Munchkin, and 1/3 Breed cards, which let you have multiple classes and races, which comes in handy when you’re mashing multiple games together.

Munchkin 6 - Double Dungeons

Portal To Another Dungeon

Munchkin 6: Double Dungeons is a Munchkin expansion that adds additional “dungeon rules” to each round, making the game play a bit more like an actual dungeon crawler while maintaining its wacky tone.

Munchkin: 6 Double Dungeons provides players with a new experience by adding rules for separate dungeons. Portal cards allow players totravel between different dungeonsif they get stuck in one that is tough and hard to get through. This expansion definitely adds anotherlevelof difficulty, as each dungeon places its own restrictions on how players can overcome challenges.

Munchkin Dragons

Munchkin Unicorns

Cuteness Overload

Munchkin Unicorns adds the adorable mythical unicorns as “monsters” as well as a narwhals and a “Monocertops” dinosaur. These are some genuinely funny and good-looking monsters, and will enhance any game of Munchkin.

This mini-expansion is just so cute. It adds 10 uni-monsters, including a Uniduck, Narwhal, Candicorn, and many others. Three of the silliest cards are the Lunacorn, which gets +4 strength if played between 7 PM and 7 AM, the Candicorn, which gets +5 strength if played in the month of October, and the Least Unicorn, which is Level 0, but so cute that anyone who kills it is horrified by what they’ve done and instantly dies.

Munchkin 4 - The Need For Steed

It’s not the only card in this small deck that can be brutally punishing. “Dying” in munchkin causes you to lose almost all of your resources, and there are multiple cards in this deck that make it happen. As appealing as these cards are, they might not be ideal for games involving new players.

Munchkin 2 - Unnatural Axe

New Race and More Extra Goodies

Munchkin 2: Unnatural Axe is an expansion for Munchkin that introduces a new race and a ton of new cards. It’s one of the earlier expansions, and has less of a theme, but it still enchances the game a ton.

This expansion adds Orcs! As an Orc, a player can ignore a curse played on them by losing a level. Sometimes this can be very helpful, especially if a curse makes you lose your armor, which gives you +5 strength. The other ability of Orcs is that if you defeat a monster alone with no one helping, you go up an additional level. This makes them an interesting counterpoint to elves, who benefit from helping other players.

This expansion also introduces a lot of cool new weapons and monsters, as well as more modifiers. As an earlier expansion, this one doesn’t have as strong of a theme as later releases, but it’s a great way to freshen up your game with new cards without making the deck feel all that different.

Munchkin Dragons

Prepare To Battle Dragons

There is only one thing that is definitely more awesome than dinosaurs, and that’s just because it’s a mythical exaggeration of them. Munchkin Dragons is an expansion for Munchkin that adds different types of dragons and dragon-related benefits.

The Munchkin Dragons expansion is like Munchkin Unicorns; a small, 15-card addition to Munchkin which introduces some new monsters united by a theme. The dragon monsters include the Dragonfly, Magic Dragon, Dragula and others. They introduce a variety of abilities to the game. For example, the Magic Dragon is good to encounter, because a player can decide not to fight him and just gain a treasure. This expansion is also just silly and cute overall, and generally a lot of fun.

Munchkin 4 - The Need For Steed

Big Steed Energy

Munchkin 4: The Need For Steed is an expansion for Munchkin that adds steeds for your munchkins to ride into battle. This introduces more mechanics to the game rather than just adding some extra cards.

Most of the expansions on this list just add extra cards to Munchkin’s existing decks without fundamentally changing the game. This is fine, and additional cards can become badly needed once a group has played the game quite a few times.

However, this expansion goes further, adding whole new mechanics, including steeds, such as an eagle, dragon, mutant gerbil, turtle, and others, but also hirelings. Some Hirelings are specific to certain races or classes and can give players extra benefits like carrying more items. There are also more curses and monster modifiers that can target races or classes. This is definitely one of the expansions you need to add to your game.

FAQ

Can you play the game with more than one expansion?

Yes, but you should be mindful of how big your decks are getting. The first half a dozen or so expansions won’t cause problems, but playing with hundreds of extra cards can get cumbersome. You may not see all the cards until you’ve played several games with the expansions, and you’ll need to take care to shuffle thoroughly to properly mix them. Cards in a given expansion have a small icon at the bottom. This allows you to add and remove various expansions in different combinations, making for a variety of games with a variety of different feels.

Why should I add expansions to base Munchkin?

After playing with the same base deck several times, you’ll get to the point where you’ve seen most of its cards, and encountered a lot of situations before. This can drain the novelty from the game, and expansions are a good way to add that novelty back with new and unique cards.
