Summary
By the time you reach the late game in4x gameslikeMillennia, you will most likely have a large, sprawling territory or empire. It will be filled to the brim with factories or cities producing everything you need to fulfill the needs of your citizens and, even more importantly, defend your borders.
What units you build to defend your nation is the important question that needs to be asked, as every unit serves a different purpose and some even have wildly different stats from each other. You also not only have access to land and sea units, but now you can control the skies with air units for the first time, giving you plenty of new options for production.

11Submarines
Underwater Terror
Starting from Age 8, you will be able to build submarines that can wreak havoc on your enemies' navies. The powerful thing about submarines is that they receive a substantial defense boost by operating alone, making them great as scouts to patrol the seas for enemy ships.
You automatically unlock submarines when entering all but one of the ages in Age 8. You will need to perform a research project in the Age of Utopia to unlock them there. Interestingly, if you manage to trigger the Age of Discovery or the Age of Aether at Age 5 or 7 respectively, you will be able to build early, alternate versions of submarines.

10Fighter Planes
Take To The Skies
Age 7 marks the first time you may take to the skies with planes and opens up a whole new dimension of warfare and national defense you now need to consider. Fighter planes in particular are very helpful at defending your own ground troops or strategic locations from enemy bombers.
Fighters will automatically engage enemy bombers or fighters that are interfering with your ground or naval units or help defend your cities from attacks in the skies. Make sure to research them as soon as they become available, so your opponents don’t have the aerial advantage.

9Bombers
Death From Above
Bombers represent the opposite side of the coin when compared to fighters. Their main role in combat is to rain destruction on enemy units and infrastructure from above, weakening targets for your own armies to then engage in combat.
A few well-placed bomber raids can make the difference between an easy victory or heavy casualties for your ground or naval units. Make sure to be aware of enemy fighters in the area, as they will attempt to intercept your air missions.

8Destroyers
The Seas Are Secure
The bulk of your naval forces will mostly be comprised of destroyers once you reach the late game. These ships can start to be built beginning from the Age of Rocketry, or any Age 8 equivalent, and are fast, powerful units that do a great job of fighting on the high seas.
They upgrade to the more powerful EMP Destroyer later on as well, making them excellent additions to your forces. A few full armadas to patrol your seas and engage in combat with enemy navies will save you a lot of trouble down the road, so invest early.

7Early And Modern Machine Guns
A Storm Of Bullets
Ranged units have played a significant part of your military strategy up to this point, and the machine gun units you can eventually build expand on that role significantly. Beginning at Age 7, you will either research or automatically unlock the early machine gun unit to either build orupgrade old units from.
These units pack an incredible punch, especially once you unlock more advanced types in later ages, like the modern machine gun unit. Do note, however, that if you trigger the Victory Age in Age 7 instead, the Age of Harmony, you will unlock the stationary machine gun instead, which is a much weaker unit overall.

6Assault Rifles
The Frontline Fighter
The standard military unit you can build will most likely make up the bulk of your forces, assault rifles, or shocktroopers if you wind up in the Age of Generals. They are reliable and relatively cheap to build when compared to others like ranged and mobile units.
These frontline troops are great at taking out enemy mobile forces and receive a buff to their damage when fighting those types of units. They also make great units to turn into leaders for your army, as you’ll most likely have a bunch of them around.

5Main Battle Tanks
A Fortress On Treads
Upon reaching Age 7, you will finally have the chance to retire the cavalry and bring out the big guns. Tanks replace your cavalry as mobile units and they pack a powerful punch. Landships are especially effective should you find yourself in the Age of Aether.
Later ages refine the tank even more, making it a potentially staple unit for your army. If you happen to embrace communism as your government type in Age 8, their governmental idea Heavy Armaments gives you a 50 percent discount on building main battle tanks as well, making them a great unit to use.

4Paratroopers
Get To The Chopper
Paratroopers offer an alternative to the assault rifle unit. They are also line units that deal increased damage to enemy cavalry or armored troops and have similar stats. They do a great job at filling out gaps in each of your armies.
The biggest difference between a paratrooper and an assault rifle is in their movement speed and maintenance cost. While assault rifles are slightly cheaper to build and maintain than a paratrooper, these helicopters make up for it by having almost double the movement speed of other ground troops.

3Submachine Guns
Say Hello To My Little Friend
A third-line troop option, the submachine gun unit, has a more noticeable niche compared to its brethren, the assault rifle and paratrooper. The main purpose of these units is to use them as anti-line line soldiers, beating back other line troops while not exposing themselves to the danger of mobile units the same way ranged troops do.
It is always a good idea to mix the use of your armies so that you may respond to any situation on the battlefield. Proper use of these units can keep your other more vulnerable troops safe from bad match-ups with the enemy.

2Battleships
The Dreadnoughts Fear Nothing At All
When trying to conquer a coastal city, you always want to take every advantage you can get. Once you get access to battleships and dreadnoughts in Age 7, no city will be safe from bombardment ever again. These ships are great at softening up these targets for your land armies.
With incredibly high attack and defense stats coupled with an over 400 percent bonus to defensive structures like walls and towers, battleships will rule the waves unless you can muster a strong enough force to keep them from blowing your cities up.
