Summary

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero is getting local co-op after all, but there are a few limitations. As we found out last week, you can only play one map- Hyperbolic Time Chamber. But that’s not all.

In a new showcase breaking down the different modes, we found out that two players cannot select characters simultaneously.

“After careful consideration, we have decided to implement the split-screen multiplayer mode exclusively within the ‘Hyperbolic Time Chamber’ stage,” producer Jun Furutani said. “As character selection was originally designed with single-player gameplay in mind, there will unfortunately be a slight inconvenience during character selection before a split-screen battle.

“Two players cannot simultaneously select characters, and only one player may choose a character at a time. However, we hope this mode will allow players to enjoy local matches with friends and family.”

Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero Wasn’t Originally Going To Have Local Co-Op

Earlier this year in February,Furutani said that the game wouldn’t have a split-screen modereportedly “due to issues related to Sony and Microsoft” (which many speculated meant supporting Xbox Series S, a problem thatBaldur’s Gate 3ran into).

However, at the time, he said that the team was trying to find a solution. Evidently, they did, as Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero is now launching with local co-op support, even if it’s a more limited version. There’s no word on whether it will be expanded in the future to support more maps, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

That being said, we do finally have a release date. As Furutani says in the new trailer,Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero launches on October 11 later this year. It’s been a long time coming, with the last Budokai Tenkaichi game having been released 17 years ago in 2007.
