Summary
Baldur’s Gate 3underwent many changes inearly access, with characters receiving design overhauls and even personality tweaks. The Dream Guardian was no exception to this, as longtime fans will remember interacting with them differently before the game’s full launch.
However, it turns out they also went through a fair amount of changes before this. One of the actors who plays the Dream Guardian just shared the notes they were given to describe the character for their audition, revealing that they were envisioned as a cross betweenGeralt of RiviafromThe Witcher… and a spider.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Was Influenced By The Witcher, But Not In The Way You’d Expect
Ethan Reid, the actor who provides the masculine voice for the Dream Guardian, shed some light on how he joined Baldur’s Gate 3 at MCM Comic Con this weekend. As part of a panel with other actors from the game, he went over his audition process.
“They sent me a picture of Geralt and a spider and were like, ‘These are the themes’,” says Reid. “His lines were kind of like dark, gothic. So I did them, sent them off, didn’t hear anything for four months.”
Eventually, he was called back, but he still wasn’t sure that he’d made it into the game. “They put me in the ping pong [mocap] suit, and then didn’t hear for two months and thought, ‘That was torturous’, and then they offered it without telling me what the job was.”
The Dream Guardian is also played by Díana Bermudez. Players can choose between the two voices at the start of the game.
Other Baldur’s Gate 3 characters started out with pretty basic descriptions too.At a panel last year,Halsinactor Dave Jones revealed that the original pitch for his character was “just a buff guy”.Karlach, on the other hand, was played by Samantha Béart as a cool lesbian biker, which certainly comes across in their performance.
Going back to the Dream Guardian, they changed so much that they even got a new name. Early access players will remember them as the Dream Visitor, and they were a whole lot more insidious than they are in the final game. So, it’s no surprise that they eventually moved away from that initial Geralt/Spider brief, even if I’m not incredibly clear on what that would have looked like.
