Summary
Avowedcan be played in third-person, not just first-person. This was just confirmed byObsidiantoday afterprevious gameplay footageonly showed first-person combat. But now, we’re being told that this is just one of the options, and you’ll be able to play the whole game in third-person if you want to.
This is an improvement from Obsidian’s previous open-world RPG,The Outer Worlds, which locked players into first-person for the entire game. Frustratingly, this meant you didn’t get many opportunities to actually see the character you’d spent so much time creating at the start of the game, an issue that will be avoided in Avowed.
Avowed Does Have A Third-Person Mode
Obsidian just announced this loud and proud over on Twitter, news which has pleased many in the community. But if you want to have a look at third-person in action, you can check out the latest gameplay footage shared today, which finally gives us a peek at how this will work. You can see the player toggle to third-person at around the 10-minute mark.
This looks a whole lot like how it works in what is perhaps Obsidian’s most beloved game,Fallout: New Vegas. Being made in the same engine asFallout 3, it also allowed players to switch between first and third-person - although most players would probably tell you that sticking with the former was best. Still, it let you admire the character you’d created. Or at least, the back of them, unless you awkwardly swivelled the camera around.
Of course, there was much more to show off in this latest Avowed demo than just being able to see your character from behind. We also got another look at the dialogue system - and even the player hitting on an NPC. Alas, it led nowhere, but there are plenty of more fish in the sea, I’m sure.
With that said, don’t expect to be romancing any of your companions. It’s already been confirmed that theywon’t have approval metres or relationship mechanics, so this won’t be filling theBaldur’s Gate 3-shaped hole in your life in every respect. Still, like other fantasy RPGs, we now know that we can make our characters look pretty and stare at them throughout the whole game, so at least there’s that.
