The majority of the entities you’ll encounter during your quota inLethal Companyare natural fauna, no matter how terrifying or unusual they may seem. Not everything you’ll encounter is flesh and blood, though. On some moons, you’ll find the giant, mechanical Old Bird waiting. While their name may suggest something avian, the Old Bird’s design is anything but.

These towering mechs are advanced war machines, built to be indestructible and packed full of weaponry. Their lore states that they pick a moon and stay on it forever, but many have reported seeing them travel elsewhere. If you find yourself encountering one, you best be prepared.

Old Bird Behavior

Inactive State

Old Birds havetwo different behavior statesthey can exist in:InactiveandActivate. When youfirst arrive at a mooncapable of spawning them, any Old Birdson that moon willstart off in their Inactive state.

TheirInactive state is the best time to scan one, as this will give you plenty of time to get it done without being attacked by the Old Bird itself.

When in theirInactive state, Old Birds willstand motionless in their spawn location, and you’ll befree to walk around them, scan them, or even strike them withany equipment you have, though itwon’t do any damage.

Active State

TheActive stateis whenOld Birds become dangerous and a major threatto you or your fellow employees, and you’ll generally want toget to the ship as soon as possibleonce they hit this state.

During this time, Old Birds will begin toroam around the map slowly, and each of theirfootsteps will cause slight screen shakingif you’re close enough, similar toEarth Leviathan tremors.

Old Birds willenter their Active Stateonce thetime reaches 3 PMor once aplayer removes an Apparatusfrom the complex if one has spawned.

If aplanet is Eclipsed, a random number ofOld Birds will already be active, especially if there are other entities present.

Once an Old Bird hasdetected a player within their range, they will beginemiting a disorienting warningklaxon, and eitherswitch from roaming to chasing or from roaming to attacking, depending onhow close you areto each individual Old Bird.

The Old Bird hasfour different attacksyou’ll need to watch out forwith varying ranges and damagenumbers:

Short

20 (Per second while grabbed.)

The Old Bird willgrab the nearest employee and incinerate themwith its flamethrower arm inaround a second and a half.

Will always killthe grabbed employee unlesssomeone manages to stun the Old Birdin time.

Medium

10

The Old Bird stomps the nearest employee andknocks them back significantly.

70

The Old Birdtakes off like it’s chasingan employee, butquickly comes back downto stomp on an employee.

Long

30 (Per Missile)

The Old Birdstops in place for a few secondsthenlaunches a barrage of missilesin a single direction.

Once theOld Birds are active, they willstay in that state until you leavethe moon, though it’s possible to disrupt their behavior temporarily byentering the facilityandletting them return to roaming.

Stayinginside the ship won’t fully protect youfrom Old Birds, as they can still aim andhit you with their missilesif they have sight lines.

How To Deal With The Old Bird

Much likethe Jesterandthe Coil-Head, theOld Bird cannot be killedby normal means, so you’ll either have toleave before it’s activated, try toavoid its rampage until you leave, or coordinate with your team toincapacitate them.

Themost important thingto do, whether you’re solo or on a team, is toavoid its light beam, as itmarks the majority of its sight line. As long as youstay out of it, you’ve got a fairlylow chance of being attackedunless the Old Bird is already attacking an entity.

The Old Bird’s light beam willtemporarilydeactivate for around 15 secondson a fairly consistent timer if ithasn’t located anything nearbyfor some time.

As soon as you’re on the moon, take note of any Old Birdsthat have spawnedbefore going into the facility, especially if you’reon low visibility moons or there’s weatherto deal with.

Next, either try tokeep an eye on the timeyourself orhave a teammate keep track of itfor youvia walkie-talkieuntil it reaches 3PM, so you’ll know exactly when the Old Birds become active.

Ifyou’re on a team, you cancoordinate with each othertouse a Radar Boosterto repeatedly stun an Old Bird, but thisonly works for a single Old Bird.

This alsoapplies if you’re going to take the Apparatusout: if you’re playing with a team, keep each other updatedon the Old Bird’s movements as soon as you do so, and try toleave the Apparatus for last, so you get as much time as possible.

How To Get The Old Bird To Fight Other Entities

One method forgetting away from an active Old Birdis tolet it fight other entitiesif they’ve also spawned on the moon. They arehostile to any entity except for other Old Birds, and they willactively search out other entitiesif they’ve noticed them.

Baboon Hawksare thesafest enemyyou canget Old Birds to fight, as even in a large group, they’re the least likely to kill youbefore you’re able to get the fight started.

This tactic ispossible on any moonthey spawn on, but it’smost difficult on Embriondue to the low spawn chances for non-Old Bird entities.

BothEyeless DogsandForest Keepersare also morecommon entities you can make fight Old Birds, but they’re a lotmore dangerousto use as a distraction sincethey can kill you in a single hit.

Once the Old Bird hasstarted fighting an entity, you’ll havearound 10 to 20 seconds to escape, depending onwhat it’s fighting and how many there are.

How To Run From Active Old Birds

If youdon’t want to risk dying to another entitywhile trying to make an Old Bird fight it, or you just want to get your scrap and go, you’llhave to avoid the Old Birdsas best you can.

Try tomove the most valuable scrap to the ship or close by it earlyon to cut down on trips once the Old Birds are active, and in case you need to make a quick escape.

While Old Birds canalways catch up to you or a teammateusing their flight,TZP-Inhalant is still a great option for escapeas it’llboost your speedand that cangive you time to avoid an attack or get to a hiding spot.

Old Birds canalso be stunned with equipmentlike the Stun Grenade orZap Gun, but each tacticcarries the risk of significant damagesince you’ll need to be close to the Old Bird to use them.

On Artifice, you canlock an Active or Inactive Old Bird upinside thethree accessible buildingsusing the main door’s switch ifone hasspawned inside them.
