Summary

30 years is a long time for a card game to exist butMagic: The Gatheringis still going strong after more than 100 sets. There have been core sets, supplemental sets, starter sets, and more, each one adding tons of cards to the game with every release.

Keeping track of all those sets can be a bit of a headache, especially since new sets are added every year. If you’re on the hunt for a specific set or just want to feel old as you reminisce about the good ol’ days of Magic, we took the time to assemble all the sets together in one place just for you.

Just How Many Magic Sets Are We Covering?

Buckle Up, The Multiverse Is Big

Magic: The Gathering reached100 main sets with the releaseof the Western-themed Outlaws of Thunder Junction, but it turns out that there are way more sets than that.

Thanks to various supplemental sets, including those that exist outside the regular release schedule, the total number of sets is a lot higher.

This numbering gets only more complicated when you factor in digital-only sets that have been released on Magic: The Gathering Online and Arena, or sets that were released in specific regions and were not available in all parts of the world.

To throw another wrench in the numbering, there are sets like Alpha and Beta, which are both technically the same set, called Limited Edition, but are two different print runs of the set.

These two printings have a different number of cards in them, while at the same time, Unlimited is the second edition of the original set, but is considered a separate set.

Every Magic: The Gathering Set In Release Order

The main sets of Magic: The Gathering are the meat and potatoes of the game. They give players a rotating schedule of cards that come in and out of Standard, while automatically entering intoEternal formats like Legacyand Modern.

The main sets of Magic are categorized as either being a Core Set, something that Magic hasn’t done in a while but are intended to be a bit more ‘evergreen’ in flavor and mechanics, and Expansions, which are more focused on an event or plane, and tend to have more specific mechanics and themes.
