Summary
Mariois the world’s most recognizable video game character, mainly due to his longevity. The little Italian plumber has been saving Princesses since the ’80s. Yet, he’s not the only one to feature in his games. There are plenty of characters in Super Mario titles, including the likes of Princess Peach and Luigi. Those two and many other characters are iconic in their own right.
As such, some of the usual supporting players have been stars in their own games. The titles in question are still part of the Mario universe, but the famous plumber isn’t the main character in them. Here are some of the games that fit into that category.

6Yoshi’s Woolly World
Unlike most of the secondary characters in the Mario universe, Yoshi has been getting his own games for many years. In fact, he was starring in games all the way back in the ’90s and has continued to do so since. One ofYoshi’s best titlesis Yoshi’s Woolly World. The game isn’t a complete departure from the standard Mario adventure, as it’s a platformer.
Yet, the entire world and everyone in it is made of wool and cloth. So, it’s an adorable game to look at. Yoshi has his standard abilities, such as grabbing things with his tongue and his signature flutter jump. However, he does produce balls of yarn instead of eggs.

5New Super Luigi U
New Super Luigi U is an expansion of New Super Mario Bros U. It’s a lot like the base game in that it’s a 2D platformer that you’re able to play cooperatively. The most significant difference, however, is that it stars Luigi instead of Mario.
So, instead of the red plumber going on an adventure to save Princess Peach, it’s the green one doing so. Another difference is that this title is generally more difficult. The shortened time limit is a big reason why, as every level only gives you 100 seconds to beat it. Therefore, you’re encouraged to speed through them as fast as possible.

Wario is perhaps the most surprising Mario character to star in their own game since he isn’t really a significant part of the Super Mario titles. Yet, he doesn’t just have one title dedicated to him. The villain has a whole series of games, and WarioWare Move It is amongthe best of them.
Like the other titles in the series, the game is all about minigames. You are given waves of minigames that you have to complete. You don’t get much time to do each one either. In fact, the game is all about testing your speed. This results in plenty of fast-paced and chaotic fun.

Luigi’s Mansion 3 differs greatly from the types of adventures Mario embarks on. In it, Luigi must explore a mansion filled with ghosts. His goal is to save his friends, who have been captured by King Boo.
It’s fair to say that the green plumber is a bit scared of the situation he finds himself in. Yet, he faces his fears and takes the ghosts on. So, the game isn’t a platformer. Instead, it’s an action-adventure title where you use a special device to capture ghosts. It makes you feel a bit like a Ghostbuster.

2Princess Peach: Showtime!
Princess Peach has been in plenty of Mario games. Unfortunately for her, though, she is often getting kidnapped by giant monsters in those ones. However, that is not the case in Princess Peach: Showtime! In this game, she plays the leading role.
It’s set inside a theater that has been taken over by an evil sorceress. To save it, Princess Peach must make her way through different plays, taking on various roles. Each of these rolesfits the setting they’re in and gives her special abilities. For example, sometimes, she’s a swordfighter who attacks enemies with her blade, which is very different from when she’s baking cakes as Patissiere Peach.

Captain Toad and Toadette are two of the most recognizable Toads in the Mario universe. So, they have earned their own game. This comes in the form of Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. It’s based on the Captain Toad’s Adventures minigame from Super Mario 3D World.
It’s a puzzle game that places Captain Toad or Toadette on diorama-like levels with the goal of reaching the star at the end. Where it differs from usual Mario games is that you may’t jump. The ability to leap into the air is replaced with the ability to spin the level around, which grants you new perspectives on things and allows you to see new paths. Along with this, you need to use your brain and plenty of patience to progress.
