Summary

They say that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Many video game developers embrace this adage, incorporating monster mechanics where enemies can turn on each other. After all, what’s more satisfying than wiping out hordes of enemies? Watching them destroy each other while you sit back and enjoy the chaos!

The chaos of enemy infighting not only adds a strategic layer to gameplay but also makes the game world feel more dynamic and alive. Watching monsters turn on each other can be immensely satisfying and a crucial tactic for survival.

Jiyan, Tacet Discords, and Exiles in Wuthering Waves

Wuthering Waves is an open-world RPG that sees you adventuring across the world of Solaris-3 to prevent a second global catastrophe. Throughout your travels, you regularly encounter groups of Tacet Discords (TDs), the menacing monsters that roam the land. Typically, these encounters follow a straightforward sequence: find TDs, attack TDs, and reap the rewards.

Occasionally, you’ll stumble upon groups of TDs that are locked in battle with each other. If you bide your time and let the monsters weaken each other, their HP will significantly chip away, allowing you to swoop in and deliver the final blow.

Bear from Ghost of Tsushima

Zombies, in general, have a mob mentality. If you are breathing and have a brain, you are a target. Left 4 Dead 2 magnifies the zombie threat by adding the Boomer zombie to the mix. This enormous, grotesque zombie coats its victims in bile, obstructing their vision and attracting hordes of zombies like flies to honey.

However, savvy players can turn this horrifying situation to their advantage. Enter the bile bomb, a makeshift grenade filled with Boomer bile. By tossing a bile bomb at an enemy, you can sit back and watch as the zombies do what they do best - swarm and attack. Just be sure to double-check the seals on those bile bombs before stashing them in your pack. The last thing you want is to deal with the impossible task of removing bile stains from your gear.

The Xenomorph in Alien Isolation

The monsters in Doom are not known for their intelligence. When one monster accidentally hits another with friendly fire, the injured monster will immediately turn its attention away from you to exact revenge on its attacker. These monsters will continue to fight each other until only one remains standing or until they are distracted by another party.

Only former humans, lost souls, and former demons can initiate infighting.

Cynder from Legend of Spyro

Clever positioning can easily initiate infighting. By maneuvering so that one enemy is in the line of fire of another, you can provoke them into attacking each other. It’s relatively simple to run around a group of monsters until their attacks inadvertently hit one of their comrades, sparking a battle among them. Fortunately, infighting does not trigger waiting monsters. By allowing the monsters to decimate each other without firing a single shot, you can methodically eliminate monster mobs one at a time.

Borderlands is no stranger to mobs of dangerous enemies. As you explore the landscape, you’ll encounter bandit encampments filled to the gills with enemies. InBorderlands 2and 3, it isn’t unusual to find goliaths hanging around the encampments, too. These hulking human mutants are intimidating, with their massive bulk and heavy weaponry.

Fighting Antlions in beach area of Half Life 2

Once you shoot the helmet off a goliath, it turns into a Raging Goliath. After killing one enemy, it becomes a Badass Goliath; three enemies, Super Badass Goliath; six kills, Ultimate Badass Goliath. After defeating ten or more enemies, the goliath earns the GOD-liath moniker. Defeating a GOD-liath unlocks theGoliath, Meet Davidachievement.

If you manage to shoot off their helmet, they’ll fly into an uncontrollable rage, attacking anything and everything in their vicinity. This berserk state turns them into indiscriminate killing machines. By strategically removing a goliath’s helmet, you can effectively turn it into an ally of chaos, allowing it to clear out the encampment for you.

Talion and Uruk-hai from Lord of the Rings Shadow of Mordor

Ghost of Tsushima is a gorgeous open-world game set in feudal Japan. Your adventures take you across sweeping mountain ranges, foggy forests, and along clear rivers, filled with a vibrant ecosystem. You can hunt for boars, admire sacred deer, andpet foxes. However, one word of advice: be wary of bears.

Bears (kuma) are ferocious creatures. They will attack anyone they perceive as a threat, whether it be a samurai or a Mongol. Occasionally, you’ll find bears caged by Mongols within their camps. By stealthily approaching these cages, you may release the bears, unleashing chaos and destruction upon your enemies.

The Rook Islands are home to a myriad of dangerous creatures. This tropical paradise boasts a diverse mix of wildlife, including bears, dingos, and vultures. However, one species stands out as particularly formidable: tigers.

There are three types of tigers in Far Cry 3: Sumatran, golden, and white. Golden tigers are a Sumatran variation. White tigers are harder to kill but easier to spot.

Tigers are among the most dangerous predators on the islands. These resilient animals require a significant amount of ammunition to take down. Releasing or luring a tiger into an enemy base can cause chaos and destruction, as the tiger will attack anyone it comes across.

Xenomorphs are a classicscience fiction alien race, renowned for their extreme hostility and singular focus on multiplying and destroying what they consider inferior races, primarily by implanting their eggs inside other creatures. In this particular case, those creatures are humans.

In Alien: Isolation, you are trapped onboard a decommissioned space station with hostile humans, all while being relentlessly hunted by a xenomorph. The xenomorph is an equal-opportunity predator, indiscriminately attacking any human it encounters. This inherent aggression can be turned to your advantage. By luring the xenomorph toward a group of hostile humans, you can let it eliminate them for you. One effective method is to toss a noisemaker near the humans, which will draw the attention of the xenomorph. Just be sure to run away, because once the xenomorph is done with your enemies, you’re next!

3Cynder’s Shadow Breath

Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon

Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon is the final installment of the original Spyro trilogy of games. Throughout the game, Cynder, the black dragon who once served the Dark Master Malefor, embarks on a journey to discover her destiny and role in the world. Under Malefor’s influence, Cynder gains the ability to wield multiple types of magic, including Poison, Fear, Wind, and Shadow.

While in development, Cynder was called Anti-Spyro. Cynder received her name from an internal competition run by Krome Studios.

One of Cynder’s most intriguing abilities is her mastery of Shadow magic. When she taps into her Shadow powers, she becomes an insubstantial shadow. In this form, she can unleash her Shadow Breath, a powerful ability that causes enemies to turn on each other, allowing Cynder and Spyro to maximize their damage and effectively destroy their enemies.

Much like real-life ants, the antlions in Half-Life 2 are biological robots, each with a specific role within their hive. These creatures are driven by instinct as they single-mindedly carry out their missions. For antlion soldiers, that means hunting down prey and dragging the bodies back to the nest.

Bugbait only works if there are active antlions or an antlion spawn point in the vicinity.

Antlion guards, on the other hand, serve as protectors of the nest. Equipped with a pheromone organ known as a Pheropod, they have the ability to summon soldiers to aid in their defense. Resourceful survivors harvest these Pheropods, or Bugbait, and use them to their advantage. By deploying Bugbait, players can control common antlions, directing them to attack enemies or create diversions to aid in their escape or combat strategies.

Orcs are the relentless foot soldiers of Sauron, embodying the darkest aspects of war according to J.R.R. Tolkien, as noted by Lynette Nusbacher inThe Story of J.R.R. Tolkien: Master of the Rings. True to form, the orcs inShadow of Mordorand Shadow of War are portrayed as fiercely aggressive and driven by a relentless pursuit of power.

In their insatiable greed and thirst for dominance, orcs regularly engage in deadly skirmishes with their own kind, often with minimal provocation. Sauron’s armies will regularly fight each other when they are bored, but you can also instigate infighting with a few cleverly placed traps to rile them up.
